Subscription Terms
It’s important to understand that Dewey subscriptions are licenses to use this data for a specific permitted use, they are not purchases of data. Your use of this data is contingent upon remaining subscribed. Please read the following summary of our terms carefully before using the platform, and refer to our Terms and Conditions for more information.
If you need additional clarification, please contact your subscription admin or the Dewey team.
Permitted Use
The only permitted use of data accessed on Dewey is for the following:
- The data may be used for teaching, including classes, lectures, and instructional materials.
- The data may be used for non-commercial academic or institutional research.
- The data may be shown or discussed in conference presentations, talks, and lectures.
- The data may be used in academic publications that have been formally accepted.
- The data may be used to meet the requirements of research grants or non-profit publishing obligations.
Data accessed on Dewey cannot be used for any other purpose.
Important Restrictions
- The data may not be used for any commercial purpose or to generate revenue.
- The raw data may not be shared, distributed, or published to any third party.
- The data must be deleted or destroyed when the license ends, except for limited post-term publication rights.
- The data may not be used to benchmark, validate, or compare the accuracy or quality of the data against other datasets.
- Only authorized users covered by the license may access or use the data.
- Any publications or presentations must properly attribute the original data provider and Dewey.
- The data may not be accessed, transferred, or shared in restricted jurisdictions without prior approval.
Can I Use Large Language Models and Other AI (such as ChatGPT, Google Gemini, etc.) with Dewey Data?
At this time, Dewey's license does not explicitly address the use of LLMs or AI tools to manage, process, or analyze datasets available on Dewey. However, our terms restrict users from sharing or distributing data, which generally covers the use of AI tools. Additionally, all other permitted uses and data restrictions in our license must apply, such as the retention of data post-term.
To summarize how this affects the ability of researchers to use LLMs to analyze data distributed by Dewey, we can use the following categories:
- Type 1: LLMs that retain user-provided data for any purpose, including training the LLM (e.g., ChatGPT, Llama)
- Type 2: LLMs that are licensed by an institution and have conditions of use that do not permit the retention of user-provided data (e.g., the University of Michigan’s Maizey)
- Type 3: Type 2 LLMs that are isolated within a secure network with no access to the Internet
Datasets accessed on Dewey can only be shared with LLMs from Type 2 or Type 3 categories to manage, process, or analyze data within a secure network. Type 1 LLMs ingest and use data, which counts as redistribution and is not permitted. All other terms still apply, such as the retention of this data post-term.
Data Access
External collaborators
External collaborators must also be active, university-based researchers. Their ability to work with the data depends on the type of license you hold.
- Researcher: Researcher licenses can cover researchers from multiple universities. For an external collaborator to have permitted use of the data, they should be designated as a Downloader on your Project. More info: Project Roles.
- Institutional: If your access to Dewey is through an institutional subscription, external collaborators cannot access or use the raw data unless they are covered by an equivalent license. More info: LibGuide Template
Cancelling your subscription
To cancel your subscription, you will need to complete this cancellation form ahead of your renewal deadline. Upon canceling, you are agreeing to the below:
- I will lose access to the subscription datasets on the Dewey platform
- I have deleted all copies of the data accessed during my subscription term
- I can no longer continue to use data accessed during my subscription term for any research unless it has been submitted for publication and I have notified the Dewey team
- If I am part of a research team, my agreement applies to my team members
Post-Term Use
Dewey understands the research lifecycle is long, and oftentimes, you’ll need to retain a copy of the data for multiple years to publish a paper successfully. For more information, visit our Post-Term Use and Replication Requirements page.
