Active IP Ownership

Overview

The Active IP Ownership dataset provides comprehensive coverage of intellectual property ownership across six jurisdictions: US patents, US trademarks, Canadian patents, Canadian trademarks, European trademarks, and WIPO trademarks. This dataset enables researchers to identify and analyze active trademarks and active patents associated with specific companies through multiple identifiers including company name/country, stock symbol, ISIN, or Crunchbase ID.

Data Description

The dataset consists of two primary record types: Owner Records and IP Records

Owner Records

Owner records contain company-level information and mapping fields that enable linkage to financial markets and other datasets:

  • stockSymbol: Stock symbol for publicly traded companies, text up to 20 characters
  • stockExchange: Stock exchange (nyse, nasdaq, or amex), text up to 20 characters
  • stockISIN: International Securities Identification Number, text up to 15 characters
  • stockParentOwnerId, stockParentOwnerName, stockParentOwnerCountry: For subsidiaries of publicly listed companies, these fields contain the parent company information
  • crunchbase_uuid: Crunchbase company identifier, text up to 36 characters
  • crunchbase_domain: Company domain name according to Crunchbase, text up to 500 characters

IP Records

IP records contain detailed information about individual patents and trademarks.

Coverage

The dataset covers six intellectual property jurisdictions:

  • United States patents (USPTO)
  • United States trademarks (USPTO)
  • Canadian patents
  • Canadian trademarks
  • European trademarks
  • WIPO (World Intellectual Property Organization) trademarks

Methodology

WIPO-Specific Methodology Notes

WIPO trademarks and patents have a different lifecycle from IP in other jurisdictions. The WIPO registry is a mechanism to file trademarks and patents from one origin jurisdiction to multiple designated jurisdictions. IP records in WIPO are automatically "Registered" and do not go through a "pending" phase. The filing and registration dates are the same dates.

Additional Notes

  • In rare cases where filingDate or firstPublicationDate is not present, the ip_firstPubFilingDate field is set to the internal first appearance date
