Additional Datasets (Connect)

🚧

Institutional Subscription Required

Connect datasets can be previewed and sampled by all users, but only Institutional Subscribers are eligible to add them into their Catalog. Account Admins are responsible for notifying the Dewey team if they'd like to add a Connect partner to their Dewey Catalog.

What are additional datasets?

The Connect tab provides universities the option to access additional datasets outside of the ones included with a Dewey Subscription.

These datasets require a direct license with the data providers that sell them. However, these datasets are fully embedded in the Dewey platform, so once a university has a license for it, and they are added to an institution's account, users get the same interface for discovery, downloads, project management, and team collaboration.

What are the benefits of Connect?

Libraries face many challenges when licensing datasets from vendors. Dewey has spent years developing solutions to the challenges of licensing, ingesting, storing, provisioning, filtering, and downloading large datasets. Connect removes the data infrastructure challenges for libraries licensing these datasets. Dewey can act as a central data catalog for multiple datasets, and users will benefit from the platform's user-friendly features.

It also provides librarians and Admins with visibility into researcher workflows currently happening in silos. For example, researchers often do things like 1) attempt to license datasets from vendors and sign licenses that are not permitted to sign, or 2) license data from vendors that may already be subscribed to on campus. The Request workflow built into Connect provides insights and visibility into data interests across campus. This allows librarians to engage with valuable vendors or direct researchers to other resources across campus.

How does it work?

All users can browse and sample these datasets, as they will appear in our search results if they are relevant to your use case. These datasets are clearly marked as unavailable in the standard Dewey package.

Users part of an institutional subscription who are interested in a dataset can click Request and fill out the form. Once submitted, Admins on that account can view submissions in the Data Requests section of their Account.

Coming soon: Admins will receive an email notification when new requests are submitted.

⚠️

Important: User information

Dewey will NOT connect or share users' information with vendors upon submission. We will work with Admins to assess these submissions and assist in any introductions to data vendors upon request.

Why are some dataset columns blurred?

Some of the datasets on the Connect tab includes PII, since the university holds the data license directly with the data provider. As a result, these columns are blurred out and won't be visible through the data dictionary, data preview, or sample. Once you have a license to access this dataset, and access has been granted, these columns will become viewable.

View our policy on PII attributes for datasets included in our subscription packages.
