We are exploring using ATTOM Tax Assessor data in research evaluating built environment characteristics and climate change. We are interested in the heating and cooling variables in the Tax Assessor dataset. The coverage of these variables varies widely by geography. The values in the variables are not clear.

For example, in Rhode Island, the two values in the cooling variable are "yes" or "NA". When we try to verify the meaning of these variables by looking at a sample of properties in the local tax assessor portals, we are seeing data that is inconsistent with the ATTOM data. We need to understand more about how ATTOM accesses this data and any logic they apply to make the data more uniform across localities before we can use it.
