Meaning of Missing Value about Precipitation Values in Hourly Weather Data

The precipitation variables (i.e. HOURLYPRECIPOPTIONALFLOATINGPOINT_CENTIMETERS_ ) have a high missing rate. The missing values are marked as blanks. The majority of the data consists of blanks, but there is also a large number of records where the precipitation value is 0.

Is precipitation conditionally recorded (only when rainfall occurs), or is it expected to have a value (including zero) at every time stamp?

  • Are missing values used to indicate no precipitation (i.e., no rainfall event recorded)?
  • Or do they represent missing/unavailable observations due to sensor or data issues?
