Clarification on CBG geography vintage and recommended mapping to MSAs in Advan monthly data
Hello Dewey team and community,
We are working with the Advan monthly foot traffic dataset and would appreciate clarification and advice regarding the Census geography vintage underlying the CBG identifiers.
Our goal is to assign standard MSA (CBSA) identifiers and names to the CBGs appearing in the Advan monthly data (both poi_cbg and visitor home CBGs). To do this cleanly, we would like to confirm:
Which Census geography vintage are the CBG GEOIDs based on?
(e.g. 2010/2018-style CBGs vs. 2020 CBGs)
What is the recommended approach to mapping Advan CBGs to MSAs/CBSAs?
In particular:
Should we treat the CBGs as 2010-vintage and map them via county FIPS → CBSA using a corresponding OMB delineation?
Is there a Dewey-recommended CBSA vintage (or crosswalk) that aligns best with Advan data covering roughly 2018–2024?
Are there known pitfalls or best practices we should be aware of (e.g. for counties that changed CBSA status over time)?
Any guidance on the “official” or preferred way to attach MSA identifiers to Advan CBGs would be extremely helpful, especially for ensuring consistency and reproducibility.
Many thanks in advance for your help.
Best regards,
